Case Study: Slope and Roadway Stabilization

Problem

A roadway and the nearby slope was experiencing sinking and instability due to a combination of lateral loads, roadway vibrations, and natural erosion from rainwater runoff. The compromised slope posed a risk to the structural integrity of the road and created a potential safety hazard, particularly due to the presence of a gas line beneath the roadway.

Solution

Utility Services Group was brought in to stabilize the slope and roadway, as well as prevent further erosion. They utilized the deep soil injection technique, which involves injecting polyurethane at multiple depths to achieve comprehensive stabilization. NCFI’s Terrathane 24-003 polyurethane was chosen for its structural characteristics. By confining the polyurethane within the target zones, USG was able to enhance soil density and reinforce the slope effectively. To ensure the gas line remained undisturbed during the slope and roadway stabilization, both the municipality and USG conducted thorough utility locates as part of a strong quality control process.

Results

The injection of Terrathane 24-003 successfully stabilized the slope and roadway, preventing further sinking and erosion. The careful monitoring and strategic injection ensured that the gas line remained intact and safe throughout the project. As a result, the roadway’s structural integrity was restored, the slope was stabilized, and the municipality avoided the costs and risks associated with more extensive repairs or gas line disruptions.slope next to roadway stabilization projectslope and roadway stabilization projectroadway stabilization and slope stabilization with polyurethaneroadway stabilization project with roadway markings for utility locates
