Employee Safety at USG
During any project, safety must remain the top priority. At USG, protecting our employees, clients, and the environments we work in is embedded into every phase of our operations. That commitment is why USG is the intersection of people, safety, service, and technology. This priority is reflected in every step we take during all projects, from rigorous training and certifications to proper PPE (personal protective equipment) and thoughtful protocols for employees on job sites. Risk Assessments
Before any project can begin, whether above or underground, simple or complex, a risk assessment must be performed. Conducting a thorough assessment allows our team to begin projects and mitigate any risks there may be at a job site.
Basic Safety Trainings
Knowing safety protocols is at the core of how we train all our employees. Our extensive safety training program participation arms our employees with the knowledge they need to keep themselves and everyone around them safe. Our basic safety trainings include:
- First Aid, CPR, and AED: Equipping staff with lifesaving skills for emergencies, from CPR to defibrillation, ensures USG teams are prepared to respond quickly and effectively when it matters most.
- Fire Extinguisher Training: This training not only educates employees on what to do during a fire, but also teaches how to prevent them.
- Defensive Driving: Educating the drivers on our team not only prevents accidents, but promotes the safe travel of any team member from one location to the next.
- Traffic Control and Flagger Training: For job sites exposed to traffic movement, traffic control is key. Ensuring safe and efficient traffic control around work sites protects both the employees and those driving by.
Advanced Safety Trainings
The job sites and projects our team works on here at USG can be complex. Sometimes they are roadside or even underground, which is why we take extra precautions. Here are some of the more advanced safety trainings some of our team members participate in:
- Confined Space Training: Working underground and in restricted environments is a part of both utility and infrastructure work. Confined space training ensures that our employees know proper procedures for tough and tight environments.
- 10 Hour OSHA Training: This training teaches the fundamentals of workplace and job site safety, as well as hazard recognition.
- 40 Hour HAZWOPER: Hazardous waste is dangerous, and safe disposal is key in situations in which this waste may be present. This training not only provides education on hazardous waste precautions, but also emergency response situations.
- Operator Qualification for Pipeline Safety Requirements: No job is the same, and different projects require different skill sets and safety procedures. When a job site needs specific education, we ensure our employees receive it.
Certifications
Our certifications are recognized industry-wide and are a part of our commitment to workplace and contractor safety. Here are the certifications we work to achieve at USG:
- NASSCO PACP/LACP/MACP Certification: NASSCO standards were developed by industry professionals to ensure the same language is used throughout all infrastructure inspections and repairs. The use of a consistent language when describing defects simplifies the communication between multiple contractors during a job.
- Product Application / Manufacturer Certifications: These certifications give our employees the skills needed for proper handling and installation of specialized products. Some of these include: ECan Certified Applicator, Madewell Certified Applicator, Parson, Quadex, among others.
Beyond Training and Certifications
Safety is more than just training or getting certified; it is at the core of everything we do.
Engraining safety into workplace culture is about more than compliance. This is why every employee, from experienced to those on their first day, have what we call “Stop Work Authority”. This means that anyone on a jobsite who suspects that safety has been compromised, has the authority to stop work right then and there. Additionally, our employee led and state certified Safety Committee help shape and enforce safety during every project we work on.
At USG, safety is not a checklist item or a one-time requirement; It is an ongoing commitment integrated into every project we complete. Through comprehensive training, proven safety protocols, and the use of advanced technologies, we ensure our teams are prepared to protect themselves, our clients, and the environments we work in. This dedication defines who we are as USG, the intersection of people, service, safety, and technology. When you choose USG for your next project, you’re partnering with a team that prioritizes safety at every stage, because successful outcomes start with protecting the people behind the work.
